The Lion Park was first established in November 1966 by the world famous Chipperfields circus. It is conveniently situated in the middle of the Gauteng-Tshwane complex. It is 2 000 metres above sea level at approximately the same altitude as Johannesburg. The climate is typical of the Highveld and thus ideal for indigenous Highveld fauna. Most, if not all, the indigenous animals seen at the Lion Park are therefore quite at home here.
The Lion Park is neither a game reserve nor a zoo. It has been split into two areas, one area for the herbivores such as zebra, giraffe, and various plaints antelope and other grass-eating animals. These indigenous animals roam around the area as freely as possible in their natural environment and visitors are able to drive along the one-way road which winds through the park and leads you from the main entrance gate through the antelope park and then into the carnivore camps. Visitors are able to view the animals at close quarters at any given time.
The carnivore camps currently house three prides of Lions. Barriers and fences, to prevent the different prides from being able to get at each other, separate all the camps. By nature, Lions are protective of their territory and can become fierce and aggressive if other Lions or prides enter their domain. The camps are therefore divided by two fences about three metres high and a few metres apart, and they conform to Nature Conservation (Gauteng) specifications.
Most of the Lions at the Park are the progeny of Lions that were originally from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Northern Gauteng and Botswana. To avoid inbreeding, the Lion Park introduces new Lions from other areas. The Lions here have prospered and multiplied and all live in comfortable conditions. The Lion Park recently introduced a new camp, a first in South Africa, which houses a clan of hyeana.
The Lion Park is the first to be established in South Africa and the only one in Gauteng and is supervised by the Gauteng Department of Nature Conservation.

The farm is run by a father and son team and currently employ more than 130 people.
Ludwig Taschner after whom the farm is named was born in Germany during the second world war.
He trained as a nurseryman in East Germany. He subsequently escaped form East Germany in 1960.
He gained invaluable experience by working in Nurseries in West Germany, Switzerland and in England where he started to specialise in rose growing.
Ludwig arrived in Pretoria in 1962 and worked for Buss Nurseries which under his management developed into the largest rose growers in South Africa.
He founded Ludwig’s Roses north of Pretoria in March 1971. From small beginnings it has now become world renowned and the premier rose nursery in South Africa with the largest selection of rose varieties available in the world.
Ludwig’s pioneered the propagation of roses in containers. Previously roses could only be purchased in winter as pruned, bare-rooted plants. The effect containerised rose plants had on South Africa is that roses could now be purchased all year round, which meant that gardeners could select roses by their flowers, fragrance and growth habit for most of the year. This obviously facilitated popularising roses in every South African garden even more…
Ludwig’s has built up a trustful and fruitful relationship with over 25 breeders from all over the world and annually tests thousands of new varieties according to their performance in the South African climate. From these a selection of 10 to 20 new varieties are named and released annually. Ludwig’s Roses is proud to have released countless top garden roses since they first opened their doors to the public 34 years ago. Varieties like Just Joey, Burning Sky, Casanova, Esther Geldenhuys, Germiston Gold, Rainbow Nation, Madiba and South Africa are to name but a few of the “rose celebrities”.
In 1978 Ludwig Taschner married Pamela, they have three children, one son and two daughters.
His son Halmar has become an integral part of the nursery and introduced more modern and innovative methods, which have ensured that Ludwig’s Roses stay on the forefront of the nursery industry.
Ludwig’s children's fluency in Sotho has greatly advantaged a superb almost family-like relationship with the more than 130 strong labour force.
After graduating as an Interior architect, Heike, Ludwig’s eldest daughter, revamped the nursery’s coffee shop and has brought a sense of style and planning to the farms new additions.
Anja, Ludwig’s youngest daughter has translated her love for roses in her various art forms ranging from paintings to children’s books. Anja is now part of the team at the farm and is presently running the miniature pot rose production department.
Ludwig is the mastermind behind enthusing gardeners to get “hooked” on growing roses. He has been writing about, giving talks about and has travelled throughout South Africa and the world to convey the love of the rose. He released his first colour catalogue in 1975 with only 180 varieties listed, today the catalogue contains over 1 000 varieties in a myriad of colours, fragrances, growth habits – something to fulfil anyone’s desire. Over the years the catalogue has become “a must have” collectors item and is posted free of charge to over 50 000 gardeners around the country.
By sending out a free monthly “talking roses” e-mail newsletter to over 13 000 “rose friends”, Ludwig stays in close contact with anyone who enjoys the beauty of the rose. The website also has ample information on the growing of roses plus descriptions and photographs of all the different roses.
Visiting the mother nursery north of Pretoria is a sight to behold. A million rose bushes in full bloom come across like an ocean of colour with an overwhelming fragrance.
In 1996 Ludwig opened a 4.5ha cut rose farm SOLEIL CUT ROSES in Pretoria East. Here more than 30 000 cut rose stems are picked each and every day.
In 2004 LUDWIG’S ROSES EGOLI an outlet in Johannesburg was opened. This branch boasts over 1000 varieties amounting to over 40 000 rose plants for sale. Walking through the isles of named roses is an experience in itself.
In 2006 LUDWIG’S ROSES WINELANDS an outlet near Stellenbosch was opened. This branch boasts over 1000 varieties amounting to over 30 000 rose plants for sale. Just paying this rose nursery set in the beautiful surroundings of the Cape Winelands a visit is a must.
In 2008 LUDWIG"S STAR ROSES an outlet in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal was opened. This branch also boasts all of our famous varieties. Magda van Zyl who has been with the company for 20 years, is the manageress of this newest addition to the group. We have taken over the nursery from Lyn Keppler's sister and brother in law and are very proud to be able to carry on with Lyn's legacy of growing roses successfully in KZN.
Ludwig plays an active role in the Federation of Rose Societies of South Africa. He has been the editor of all their publications for the past 25 years.
He was also chairman of the Rose Growers Association for 25 years and was honoured with the “Gold Medal” by his colleagues of the South African Nurseryman’ Association.
Halmar, his son, is currently chairman of the the Rose Growers Association – affiliated to SANA – the SA Nursery Association.
Ludwig Taschner wrote and published “LIVING WITH ROSES” A handbook for the commercial production of Cut Roses in 1991. In 2001 he was commissioned to write a book called ‘ROSES’ which has become a best seller.
Ludwig’s deep love for working with roses has encouraged him to see no boundaries when it comes to promoting roses. This has led to him becoming a household name in South Africa. He is happiest whilst and is always found walking through his roses… and most important of all, his children are more than happy to follow in his footsteps…

Welcome to Shades of Ngwenya
Shades of Ngwenya glass blowing factory is the hub of the Ngwenya Glass Village, only 20 minutes from JHB, a glass wonderland where you can watch the ancient art of glassblowing at work and buy fabulous handmade recycled glassware. Gilroys
Ngwenya Glass Village is the ideal venue for a day or weekend outing with 12 Shops to browse around. Come and enjoy long lazy lunches at all Gilroy's brewery and Zest – World of Food under shady trees while the kids have fun in the playground.
Outside the factory, mountains of recycled glass twinkle wickedly in the sun. About 500kgs of glass are crushed daily at Ngwenya, and melted down in a red hot furnace overnight, at an incredible 1400 degrees Celsius.
By morning, the glass melt is reduced to a ‘manageable’ 1200 degrees C. Then the glass-masters work their magic, drawing the glass out and blowing it into bulbous shapes.
Five days a week and the last full weekend of the month, visitors can experience the wonders of glass blowing, watching molten glass being magically transformed into beautiful trophies and awards.

SANBI’s Fynbos Programme, which hosts the CAPE partnership held the 2011 CAPE Partners Conference themed ‘Conservation and Agriculture: A Common Agenda’, at Elsenberg Agricultural Training College on 23 and 24 June 2011.
Interface between Biodiversity Conservation and Agriculture
The Conference, co-hosted by SANBI, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture and the GreenChoice Alliance through WWF – SA focused on the interface between Biodiversity Conservation and Agriculture. It provided an opportunity to reflect on the collaborative interventions and activities undertaken during the first phase of the CAPE Programme. In addition, the Conference also aimed to build a joint programme of work going forward, supported by a range of role-players in agriculture and conservation.
Government supports joint venture
To show the support for this joint venture, both the Western Cape Minister of Local Government, and Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Mr Anton Bredell, as well as the Western Cape Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Gerrit van Rensburg attended the Fynbos Conservation Awards evening. Also in attendance were Heads of Department for Agriculture and DEA&DP in the Western Cape as well as the Director General in the office of the Premier.
Carmel Mbizo, Deputy Director General at SANBI said, “It is encouraging to see our Departments working together, showing leadership in guiding our communities to manage land in a way that protects the natural resource base, while delivering economic opportunities and promoting development across South Africa.
Conference well attended
More than 200 people from the conservation, agriculture, farming, learning and other government institutions attended the two day conference, which was abuzz with presentations from both the environmental and agriculture sector on various themes such as developing a shared vision for production landscapes in the fynbos region, the value of natural capital, the shift towards more sustainable farming practices and natural solutions – adapting to climate change presented during the first day. Each session was followed by an interactive Q&A session. The second day looked at the diversification of rural livelihoods, and governance and partnerships for resource mobilisation.
This year’s conference is important to the CAPE partnership as it created the platform for joint collaboration between the conservation and agriculture sector, deepening the work of SANBI’s Fynbos Programme towards conserving and restoring the biodiversity of the Cape Floristic Region.
Rationale of the CAPE partnership
The rationale of the CAPE partnership is to create linkages between government, the private sector and civil society so that we all work together with a common strategy, avoiding duplication, addressing gaps and uniting to leverage resources and to tackle agreed common priorities in terms of a shared vision.
Ms Joyene Isaacs, Head of Department of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, started the two day Conference by welcoming those in attendance. As part of her opening statement, Isaacs said that “this is a marriage that has been in process for a while and this is our first step to publicly declare that conservation and agriculture can, will and should work together. This partnership is the custodian of the region’s natural resources and together we need to make sure there is enough for future generations to enjoy”.

Welwitschia Country Market
Built under the shade of giant old trees the market evolved from the idea that small is neat and good.
Grouped around a charming and imaginative aviary - the delight of children of all ages- is a collection of forty wooden shops and a covered area housing a wide range of merchandise.
The brick paved streets of the village allow pleasant meandering through the stalls and shops, with places to sit and enjoy a rustic atmosphere. The market not only caters for the tourist trade but also offers local visitors a useful and refreshing different place to do some shopping. An attractive bush pub and a family restaurant, called Upperdeck, is also on the grounds plus Pick a Pancake and Country Griller offering a variety of light meals at excellent prices.
The market offers good parking and clean toilet facilities, a playground for children and additional entertainment on Sundays & all public holidays.
This venue is fun for the whole family.

CHALLENGES EVERY COMPANY FACES:
- Not every member of a company is a mad adventure-loving person wanting to jump out of planes or bungy jump. Through past experience, just the mere suggestion of having to go out and do something different with one's company, has many breaking out in a cold sweat and deciding to skip the day entirely.
- Often just one individual dealing with irrational fears can put a dampener on the event, as these individuals affect everyone around them.
- Obviously, the bigger the group, the more chance there is that not everyone in the group is going to cope with extreme activities.
- Many Corporate Fundays are not as successful as they could be, because service providers do not always cater for everyone.
SO.... WE HAVE PUT TOGETHER SOMETHING DIFFERENT WITHOUT LOSING THE EDGE!

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE MAZE - WHAT DOES EVERYONE DO HERE??????
Our main attraction is a giant maze. (for pictures and more detailed information, see menu on left of this screen). This can be either our Elemental maze constructed from reeds which is open June-December, or our maize maze which is open January-June.
Your group will go into the maze in teams(made up of your group members). Maximum team size is about 4 people, so everyone can have fun and be involved in the decision making process and see and answer the quiz. YES, there is a quiz in the giant maze. Just for fun, we have questions to suit everyone. Everyone wins an iced lolly as a prize after handing in their answer sheets. No googling allowed, and it is just for fun, so don't stress about it!
After your group has completed the giant maze, there are fun puzzles and games to be done in the courtyard area. Most families/groups are with us about 3-4 hours minimum, but you are welcome to stay longer!
The Courtyard area has smaller mazes and puzzles. A challenge for everyone!
Rope Maze – a great team event that has you racing around a spiderweb of coloured ropes - appeals to all ages. We now have 2 of these fun mazes!
Picture of labyrinth in the foreground, rope maze and indigenous maze in the background. Labyrinth – a meditative meander with a teaching sun-dial at the centre. We have a new Labyrinth just completed that combines the ancient with the classical. Pink crystals adorn the centre spot
Indigenous maze - can you follow the rules AND find your way out? Looks easy but is deceptively hard to solve.
Six Minute Mazes – five unique logic puzzles design to test your strategic thinking and mind-mapping skills. Our new
Maths maze in foreground, one of the 6 minute mazes.
Soccer shooter - a target shooting game
Peep Board - lovely for family pictures
Wobblers - Test your balancing skills by trying to wobble the ball into the centre of the labyrinth design. Great for all ages!
Coffee Shop - serves light meals, teas/coffee. cold drinks and ice-creams.
For kids parties, corporate events and Moonlight Mazes you need to book – refer to the details on each.

We are situated on the upper stretches of the Magalies River. Water quality is superb, being in close proximity to the source at Maloneys Eye.
45 minutes from Johannesburg and Pretoria we are easily accessible for day trips.
Sections
The venue is divided into four sections:
- Section 1 - Valley Brook
- Section 2 - Golden Brook
- Section 3 - Kingfisher Bend
- Section 4 - Hekpoort 1
We are the founding member of the Magalies River Conservancy.
The major objectives defined in the Conservancy rules are:
- Preservation, Protection and increase of (threatened) indigenous yellow fish species in the river system.
- Improving water quality in the river and anti-erosion measures on river banks and catchment areas.
- Conservation of mammals and insects.
- Eradication of exotic plants and trees, resulting in encouraging indigenous birds to the area.
Envronment
The area is endemic to a multitude of ferns, Cycads, wild flowers and indigenous trees. Please be considerate when walking on trails and along river banks not to damage the local flora. We would appreciate your assistance in preserving the pristine condition of this environment by picking up any litter that you may find.
Birding
The area consists of riverine forest, wooded gulleys bordered by hilly grassland/savannah. This habitat is home to an extensive variety of bird species (Bird checklist provided). We welcome the inclusion of any species which you may identify which we have not included.
Fly-fishing
Most guests visit our establishment in search of the large scale Yellow fish and more importantly, Small Scale Yellow fish. Not only are these two of the species which make up part of the 9x9 flyfishing challenge, but they are a enviable quarry found in a small river system which provides challenging and exciting fishing for quality fly-fishers.
Our fishing controls require the following:
- Strictly fly-fishing
- Maximum of four fly-fishers per beat
- Only catch and release
- Barbless Hooks
- Soft mesh landing nets
- Wetting hands before handling fish
- Submission of catch reports for research
This style of flyfishing requires skills and tactics which differ to used in still water venues. Due to the river environment techniques are restricted to the following casting techniques:
- Roll-cast
- Bow and arrow casts
- Normal flyfishing casts should be kept short and restricted to one false cast before presentation of the fly.

Our large clear diving lake is an old open cast chrome mine surrounded by natural bush and farmlands. The water is so clean because it is naturally replenished by an underwater spring.
Entry is via paved paths for an easy plunge into the warm water.
Sporting five training platforms, it is the perfect place for instruction to beginners as well as for recreational dives at all levels. All training from One Star/Open Water Diver to Instructor Training can be done here.
The compressor room readily supplies air fills if you bring your own cylinders, and can hire out cylinders for those who need them.
The depth of our lake is 33m and the viz, which can reach 10m, is good. All divers can relax, as there are no major hazards or extreme depths. Numerous Black Bass and various species of Kurper are found in the shallows, while a bus, aeroplane, Puma hellicopter, several yachts, swimming pool, and various other items (even a computer station!) have also been introduced. Both the bus and aeroplane can safely be entered by appropriately trained divers.
Under the shadey trees are lovely picnic areas with tables and braai (BBQ) facilities where old and new friends can reminisce about the day's diving activities.

- Stone’s throw away: Just an hour’s drive away from Johannesburg and Pretoria
- Groundbreaking: Site of dramatic discoveries that changed the way we view humanity and the history of human development
- World-renowned: Declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1999
- Famous names: New scientific exhibition showcases the finds of hominid fossils “Mrs Ples” and “Little Foot”
The exhibition
An hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, are the Sterkfontein Caves, world famous for their fossil finds and a well-known visitor destination. After an extensive face-lift in 2005, the Sterkfontein Caves is now home to a top restaurant, conferencing facilities, improved access into the caves, new walkways and a boardwalk past the excavation site where world-acclaimed fossils have been discovered.
The new scientific exhibition centre showcases a reconstruction of a mined cave – versus a pristine cave – cave formations and geology, early life forms, mammals and hominid fossils, among other topics. It describes in detail important finds such as “Mrs Ples”, the “Taung Child” and “Little Foot”, as well as providing information about fossilisation, palaeobotany and landscapes.

By coming here, you are coming to the birthplace of humanity. Welcome home!

- Organic Strawberry Picking is available to the public from 10:00 untill 16:00 every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday during the Strawberry season.
- The season extends from approximately mid-September to mid-December every year. Exact dates are dependant on the weather. Watch this page for notification.
- Keep an eye on this page for details of exactly when the Strawberry Picking will commence, as this is totally dependant on the availability of ripe strawberries.
- On arrival during 2011, a non-refundable entry fee of R50.00 per adult and R40.00 per child under 10 years -unchanged from 2010- is charged to enter Tangaroa Farm. (Babies under twelve months enter free.) This entitles you to picnic, walk our Blue Moon Labyrinth, use our braai facilities, or to pick organically grown strawberries and also mulberries when they are ripe.
- When the strawberries are in plentiful supply, (which is NOT always the case, especially as a direct result of the lack of rain), we will provide you with a container to put them in, before weighing, and charging at the going rate. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BEST TIME TO COME STRAWBERRY PICKING IS OBVIOUSLY FIRST THING ON A SATURDAY MORNING.
- During the strawberry season the Tea Garden is open from 08:30 for breakfast orders, light lunches and of course, many decadent strawberry delights that are served on Saturdays, Sundays, and Public Holidays throughout the strawberry season.
- Throughout the year the FRAISE RESTAURANT at Tangaroa Farm serves superior dinners on Friday and Saturday evenings, by appointment only. (The detailed menu is on the Fraise Restaurant and Functions page.)
- Picnic baskets are available DURING STRAWBERRY SEASON AND OVER THE VALENTINE'S WEEKEND ONLY, during the day or as a candle-light option in the evening, if booked and paid for, no less than 48 hours in advance. Your order and the appropriate reference details, along with the bank deposit confirmation, is required to enable the kitchen to prepare all the delightful goodies that make up the basket, or alternatively, during stawberry season, bring along your own picnic, or braai, and relax under the trees next to the dam on our farm.
- Special interest groups and school groups who would like to come strawberry picking are accommodated by appointment during weekdays throughout the strawberry season.
- Try our delicious homemade Strawberry Jam, or take home a beaded strawberry key ring or other momento of your visit.
- Please Note: As we have many animals that run free on our farm, we do not under any circumstances allow visitors pets or other animals, at Tangaroa.

The Herbal Centre is in the Hartebeespoort / De Wildt area on the way to Brits, against the northern slopes of the great Magaliesberge. It is a unique and beautiful place created to teach people all about herbs. The Centre has carefully laid out paths for easy access to all areas:
To the nursery, to the tea garden and potager garden, shop, lecture hall, chapel, labyrinth, apothecary, fairy gallery and of course the gardens.
The great garden is the pivot on which all else turns in which there are culinary, aromatic, international healing plants and Africa's own indigenous healing plants, all laid out in traditional style.
The manufacturing studio creates, processes and packages all the items that are available in the shop - a cottage industry in grown-up form. The range of products is fascinating - gourmet sections, toiletries, bath products, potpourri's, fragrant oils, creams and gift items - all made in the studio - are a shoppers delight and there is a special browsing section of books and charts.
The exquisite angel exhibition - "Angels all around us" and the tiny non-denominational chapel, and the 11th century copy of Charters Cathedral's Labyrinth invite moments of peace and reflection, and the paved walks invite, we hope, inspiration and enjoyment of the plants; a showcase of the most unusual food and medicinal plants in South Africa.
